Chapter 10

Love and Happiness

Alita was at her stock clerk job. She was busy placing bottles of shampoo and conditioner on the shelves. She was working hard to make her shelf look nice and presentable when she felt a presence behind her back. Alita slowly looked up. At first, she couldn’t recognize the elderly man who was leering at her. But she could never forget a face covered with moles. It was the ugly, wrinkled face of the man who raped her when she was a teenager.

“Hey there,” he said.

“Jack Dawson! W-what you doing here?”

“I’m out now. Did my time.”

“Oh.” she told him. “That’s nice.” Alita wondered why the prison system didn’t warn her about his release. And how the hell did Jack know where she worked?

She got her answer soon enough. Jerrod Dawson walked up to his daddy and cheerfully patted him on the back.

“Hey, what’s up, Alita. It’s good to see you’re busy working at your job.”

She felt as if Jerrod had taken a finger nail file and jabbed it into her neck. She tightly clutched a tall heavy bottle of deep conditioner.

“You know how big this store is? How’d you end up here in my aisle during my shift? What do you want?” She stared at the two men and slowly rose to her feet with the bottle held close to her side.

“We were in the area, Alita.”

“I don’t believe that, Jerrod. I’ve blocked you from calling me so now you think you can walk up on my job and start more shit. But I already told you last time we talked . . . I have nothing for you. Elyse knows everything. And so does Leno.”

“Elyse knows what? What is she talking about, son?”

Jerrod failed to answer his dad. It seemed that the words that Alita spoke took the wind out of his sails. He looked flustered. He coughed. Then said nothing.

“If you don’t mind, I have a job to do. I don’t want you here, and I will call security if I have to.”

“Are you threatening us?” Jerrod asked.

“I’m asking you nicely to leave. I don’t feel comfortable seeing you here, Jerrod. You or your daddy.”

“But Jack is your baby daddy.”

“He raped me. It’s not the same.” Alita was angry. “He hasn’t been around all of her life so what difference does it make now?”

“He wasn’t around because you had him locked up for those false charges.” She and Jerrod went at it for another minute. Jack stood in the background looking aggravated.

“Look, Jerrod. I said what I said and now you need to go. You don’t live around here and I know you’re still trying to shake me down. But it won’t work this time.” Alita still regretted the many times in the past that she gave in to Jerrod and forked over hundreds of dollars to him because he threatened to expose her.

“Alita, because of you, my dad is a felon. Nobody will hire him.”

“That ain’t my problem! I’ve told you that a thousand times.
